Aussie Meat Pies in the Shipyard
Due to the harsh winter weather we have been experiencing lately, I have been looking for meals that really warm you up. I was ecstatic to find myself at Yume Wo Katare in Porter for steaming hot ramen about a week ago – this was a perfect meal on one of the coldest evenings.
I was equally excited when I got an invitation last Sunday to join a couple of friends for a post-Aussie Day recovery phase at KO Catering and Pies. Having been to their original location in Southie, we decided to make the trip over to their full restaurant in East Boston’s Shipyard. Admitedly, we got slightly lost and wound up circling the airport terminals…the warming pies that welcomed us once we did arrive, were made all the more satisfying:)
The meat pie menu is simple and whether you go for a classic minced beef and cheese or curried vegetable, you can’t go wrong.
I went for the Steak and Onion pie myself, although the breakfast bacon and egg or lamb shank and vegetable also called my name once or twice…
Here is a close up, just for good measure:) The balance between buttery and flakey pie crust and pipping hot filling all served in an aluminum pie holder is simple and heavenly. As filling as these pies are, I feel like I could eat them all day long.
Different from the KO in South Boston, KO Shipyard has a liquor license as well as other classic Australian items. For Australia week, they had a few extra specials like their steak sandwich with marinated Australian Steak (all of their lamb and beef comes from Australia) chili jam, spinach and ailoi…
Or perhaps their lamb cutlets, lightly breaded and served with home made yogurt and mint sauce.
Everything here is done just as it would be in Australia. Order anything off of their menu, pair it with a beer, or in my case, a Crabbie’s alcoholic ginger beer and catch the cricket match.
As far as solid winter meals go, an Aussie pie, hot out of the oven just can’t be beat:)
